The name of our school may be changing, but our commitment to provide a quality Catholic education to elementary and middle school students remains steadfast.

Two strong schools will be getting stronger!

In 2022-2023 St. John the Evangelist School (SJS) and St. Mary Magdalen School (SMMS) will unify and become one school with two campuses.

The St. Mary Magdalen campus will serve students from Pre-K through 4th grade, while the St. John campus will serve students from 5th grade through 8th grade.

Class sizes will remain small to support individual student success, additional classroom help and other meaningful outcomes.  We anticipate that this unification will expand the opportunities for social engagement, extracurriculars and teams.

St. Mary Magdalen School and St. John School are both strong Catholic schools with a legacy of student achievement and service. Their combined traditions span more than 165 years in Litchfield and New Haven counties.

FAQs For Families

What process is being followed for the unification of these two strong schools?

The schools have engaged a project manager to facilitate the unification. Current families, school board members, faculty and staff are an important part of the process and serve on various committees to provide input and coordinate campus resources and offerings.

The schools have a Leadership Team in place composed of the pastor, school administrators, school board members, the Archdiocese and the project manager. Together, the Leadership Team has developed key areas of focus necessary to the successful unification and launch of the new unified school.

The project manager is working closely with the committees, the Leadership Team, other constituents and the Archdiocese to meet the goals and timeline of the new school launch. The unified school will open in late August 2022.

How will the unification work with both campuses remaining open?

In 2022-2023, students in grades Pre-K through 4 will attend the St. Mary Magdalen campus, located at 140 Buckingham Street in Oakville. Students in grades 5 through 8 will attend the St. John campus, located at 760 Main Street in Watertown.

Each campus will retain a full complement of large classroom spaces outfitted with Smartboards, document cameras, secure wi-fi, technology and science labs, a full size gymnasium and age and grade appropriate resources and extra curricular activities. Most faculty members at each campus are certified, and many faculty members hold advanced degrees. Each campus has received current accreditation from NEASC (New England Association of Schools and Colleges).

The Pre-K-4 campus will be known as the Lower School and the Grade 5-8 campus will be known as the Upper School. A unified school name will be announced in the future.

Will there be a change in the school uniform?

The schools are sensitive to family budgets and will be offering a hybrid uniform for the first unified year of 2022-2023. The new school colors will include 1 color from each school - green from St. Mary Magdalen and blue from St. John. There will be an additional color added to the official school colors.

For the 2022-2023 school year, existing students have the option to wear their non-logo items from their current school. This includes slacks, shorts, skorts, jumpers and skirts. All students will be asked to purchase new shirts and new gym uniforms with the new school logo for 2022-2023. It is important that we fully adopt the new unified school community from the start of 2022-2023 to establish our new unified community.

Uniforms for interscholastic sports, clubs and other activities including spirit wear will be purchased in 2022-2023.

Families of incoming students and of students in need of new uniforms will have the opportunity to purchase uniforms through convenient vendors. These vendors will be announced and links for ordering will be available in late spring/early summer.

In the 2023-2024 school year, all students will wear the complete new school uniform and former apparel from SMMS and SJS will be retired.

What type of transportation will be available for students?

Currently, the town of Watertown provides in-town school bus service for any Watertown/Oakville resident. In addition the new unified school will continue its bus service to registered families from Waterbury and Naugatuck to both the upper and lower campus buildings. Bus schedules and routing will be available later in the summer of 2022 as part of the regular back-to-school communication.

Out of town bus service provided directly by the unified school is determined by enrollment from towns, and if there is an increase of registered students from a town not currently served by private busing, the new unified school may consider adding a bus route.

How will the community learn about new information?

The Leadership Team including the school principals, will provide regular internal communication to existing families. Prospective families will also receive updates through the admissions and registration process. This landing page for the new unified school may also contain updates and links.
